Fees for online payments
Each card payment pays Stripe’s card fee. On the Free plan it also pays Grouperly’s 1%. Both come out of the payment before Stripe pays the rest to your group’s bank account. Grouperly never holds the money.
Per payment
Section titled “Per payment”| Free plan | Paid plans | |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe’s card fee, at cost | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Grouperly | 1% | None |
| Total per payment | 3.9% + 30¢ | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| On a $5 payment | 50¢ | 45¢ |
| On a $25 payment | $1.28 | $1.03 |
| On a $100 payment | $4.20 | $3.20 |
The paid plans are Grouperly Plus and Scoutosia Pro. See Plans.
Stripe’s fee is passed on at cost: Grouperly charges exactly what Stripe charges. If Stripe changes its rate, Settings → Payments shows the new one.
Families can cover the fee
Section titled “Families can cover the fee”At checkout, a payer can choose to add the fee, so the group receives the full price. The box is unticked by default, and says exactly what it adds: for example, “Add $1.81 so Troop 1075 receives the full $50.00”. On the Free plan, it covers Grouperly’s 1% too.
Small payments
Section titled “Small payments”Stripe’s 30¢ per payment makes small payments cost more as a share: about 10% on $5, but 5% on $25.
- Stripe’s smallest card payment is $0.50. If someone owes less than that, they pay it in cash or by check.
- Collect once, not often: one payment for the season costs less than several small ones.
Cards from outside the US
Section titled “Cards from outside the US”Stripe charges 1.5% more for cards issued outside the US. Your group pays that extra at cost, as it does the rest of Stripe’s fee. On a $100 payment from a card issued abroad, Stripe’s fee is $4.70 instead of $3.20.
- The payer pays the same as anyone else. The extra is taken from what your group receives, just after the payment.
- On the Money page, it’s part of that payment’s card fee.
- If your group’s Stripe balance can’t cover it at the time, the Money page shows it as owed to Grouperly. It’s taken from your group’s Stripe account later, so it comes out of what reaches your bank.
- If the payment is refunded in full, your group doesn’t pay the extra.
Refunds
Section titled “Refunds”A leader refunds from the event’s page, in full or in part: Refund… beside a person in the RSVP list, or beside a payment under Payments received. The refund dialog says where the money goes before anything happens, and can also take the person off the event.
Stripe doesn’t return its fee when a payment is refunded, and Grouperly doesn’t return its 1%. That’s the same as any shop’s card payments. The one exception is the extra on a card from abroad, which your group doesn’t pay on a payment refunded in full.
Disputes
Section titled “Disputes”A dispute (a chargeback) is when a payer asks their bank to reverse a payment. Grouperly answers it with Stripe, and tells the group’s leaders when one opens and when it closes.
- Stripe charges a dispute fee, currently $15. The group bears it, as any merchant would.
- If the bank decides for the payer, the payment is taken back too.
- If the group wins, the payment stays. Stripe may still keep its fee.
The Money page shows each dispute and what it cost.
Where to see it all
Section titled “Where to see it all”Your group’s Money page lists every payment with its card fee, Grouperly’s fee (on the Free plan), refunds, disputes and payouts. Leaders can download it as a spreadsheet for the group’s books.
